Prayer to Our Lady of Charity, Patroness of Cuba
Most Holy Mother of Charity
who came to us as a messenger of peace across the sea.
You are the Mother of all Cubans
To you we come, Most Holy Mother of God
to honor you with love as your children.
To your motherly heart
we entrust our desires and hopes
our work and our prayers.
We pray for our torn country
that we may be able to build
a nation based on peace and unity.
We pray for our families
that they may live in fidelity and love.
We pray for our children
that they may grow strong
in spirit and in body.
We pray for our young people
that their faith may increase,
as well as their attachment to
the truth.
We pray for the sick, the homeless,
the lonely, the exiled,
and for all suffering souls.
We pray for the Catholic Church in Cuba,
for its mission,
for its priests, deacons,
religious and laity.

of justice and love

A richly-detailed bronze medal, illustrating Our Lady's appearance to the three
young boys in their boat, is accompanied by beads of copper ore which gave Cobre its name (Cobre means
copper, which was once mined near the boys' village in Cuba, many years ago). The Aves are 9mm cuprite;
they contain flecks of copper, and the verdigris color of oxidized mineral call to mind the seafoam
color of a storm tossed sea.
The sterling-capped Paters mimic these same colors: the vivid blue of the Gulf Stream swirls through
frothy seafoam and streams of copper; The jasper spacers echo the copper red. The centerpiece shows is
a bronze 4-way crucifix.

History

|
At the beginning of 17th century, two native Indians, Rodrigo and Juan de Hoyos,
together with a ten year old slave boy, Juan Moreno, went out looking for the salt needed to preserve
the meat of the Barajagua slaughter house, which supplied the workers and inhabitants of
"Santiago del Prado", now known as "El Cobre." That day they were just able to
reach Cayo Francés, halfway across the Bay of Nipe, where they encamped to escape the fury of a storm
which would have torn their frail canoe to pieces.
Calm was restored with daybreak, and they took to the transparent sea. In the
distance, they saw a white bundle floating on the waves and approaching them slowly. At first they
took it for a sea bird. As it came closer, it seemed to be a girl and at last they were able to
determine that it was a statue of the Virgin Mary holding the child on her right arm and with a gold
cross in her left hand. The statue was fastened to a board with the inscription, "I am the Virgin
of Charity."
According to the sworn testimony of witnesses, despite the recent storm and the
motion of the waves, neither the figure of the Virgin, nor her clothing, were wet.
The head of the statue is of baked clay covered with a polished coat of fine white powder, possibly
rice paste, and the recent thorough renovation of the image revealed the fine features which countless
paint coatings had deformed. A well shaped nose and a well-proportioned face with large, loving eyes
convey a gentleness that invites trust and prayer. The Virgin is about 16 inches high and her feet
rest on a brilliant moon whose ends surround on both sides the silver cloud where three cherubs spread
their golden wings. The Child, at the left side of the statue, raises a hand as if blessing, and in
his other hand he holds a gold globe. The entire figure is covered by a heavy cloak which gives it the
typical triangular shape.
The image's original clothing was white, but the faithful have given her gold and
silver colored robes. Because Our Lady of Charity is a symbol of Cuban nationality, popular statues
give her a white robe, a blue cloak and have the Child dressed in red: the colors of the Cuban flag.
Nowadays the Virgin's dress, a copy of a very early one, is of heavy lamé with gold threads, and has
the national Cuban shield embroidered on the skirt.
The simple folk have gotten used to the image of their "Cachita" with the small boat at her
feet and in it the "Three Juans" who found her floating on the water. This detail is omitted
in the oldest reproductions which copied the original statue.
At the request of the veterans of the War of Independence, Our Lady of Charity was
declared the patroness of Cuba by Benedict XV in 1916 and solemnly crowned in the Eucharistic Congress
held in Santiago de Cuba in 1936. Pope Paul VI raised her sanctuary to the category of Basilica in
1977.

La Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre
Fiesta central: 8 de septiembre
A unos 16 kilómetros al oeste de Santiago de Cuba, se halla situada la villa de El
Cobre, fundada el año 1598. Al sur de esta región se encuentra el Santuario de Nuestra Señora de la
Caridad.
Cuenta la tradición que en una mañana de 1628 salieron de Barajagua a la bahía
de Nipe a buscar sal, dos indígenas, de apellido Hoyos y un esclavo negro de diez años de edad.
Llegados a este lugar vieron que era imposible recolectar la sal por lo agitado que estaba el mar.
Buscaron refugio y al cabo de tres días pudieron embarcarse en una canoa y dirigirse a las salinas de
la costa. No hacía mucho que navegaban, cuando descubrieron sobre las olas un objeto blanco, que se
imaginaron sería el cadáver de alguna ave marina. Sin embargo advirtieron con gran sorpresa que el
objeto flotante era una imagen de la Virgen María colocada sobre una tabla. Tomaron la imagen
depositándola en la canoa y leyeron en la tabla una inscripción que decía: "Yo soy la Virgen
de la Caridad". Llevaron la Virgen en la canoa y luego de recoger la sal, volvieron a Barajagua
donde ya había llegado la noticia del hallazgo. La imagen fue trasladada al altar mayor de la iglesia
parroquial, donde un hombre de fe llamado Marías de Olivera ofreció dedicarse a su servicio.
La imagen de la Virgen de la Caridad es pequeña y su rostro es redondo. En el
brazo izquierdo sostiene al Niño Jesús quien en una mano tiene un globo terráqueo. El 10 de mayo de
1916, el Papa Benedicto XV, la proclamó Patrona de la isla.

Patrona de Cuba
Santa María de la Caridad que viniste como mensajera de paz,
flotando sobre el mar.
Tú eres la Madre de todos los cubanos.
A tí acudimos, Santa Madre de Dios,
para honrarte con nuestro amor de hijos.
En tu corazón de Madre ponemos nuestras ansias y esperanzas,
nuestros afanes y nuestras súplicas;

para que entre todos construyamos
la paz y la concordia.
Por las familias, para que vivan
la fidelidad y el amor.

Nossa Senhora da Caridade do Cobre
Festa: 08 de setembro
Em Cuba, certa manhã
de 1607 ou 1608, dois irmãos indígenas, João e Rodrigo de Joyos, e o crioulo João Moreno, de mais
ou menos uns 10 anos, foram enviados pelo administrador das estâncias de Varajagua às costas de Nipe,
para de lá trazerem certa quantidade de sal. Chegando lá encontraram um mar agitadíssimo por causa
de um forte vento que soprava e da chuva que caía. Perceberam então que era impossível executar a
tarefa a qual foram encarregados. Refugiaram-se em uma choça e lá permaneceram durante três dias,
até que a tempestade cessou e puderam embarcar em uma canoa para dirigir-se às salinas da costa.
Pelas 5 horas da manhã, perceberam um vulto, que flutuava na direção deles.
Pensaram, em princípio, se tratar de uma ave aquática, mas, ao se aproximarem do vulto, notaram que
era uma imagem de Nossa Senhora, que vinha sobre uma tábua, na qual se lia a seguinte inscrição:
“Eu sou a Virgem da Caridade”. A imagem tinha o rosto redondo, de cor clara, e sustentava no
braço esquerdo o menino, que levava em uma das mãos a esfera, símbolo do mundo, tendo a outra
levantada em atitude de dar a bênção. Ela inspirava respeito e veneração.
Os meninos então recolheram a imagem, e perceberam que nem a orla do vestido de
Nossa Senhora havia se molhado. Recolheram também, com muita pressa, a quantidade de sal que deveriam
levar, e conduziram com muito cuidado a imagem para a estância de Varajagua.
Os trabalhadores da estância, sabendo da imagem, preparam um modesto altar e
receberam Nossa Senhora com alegria e devoção. Quando o acontecimento chegou ao conhecimento do
administrador da estância, ele ordenou que se construísse uma ermida, com uma luz que ardesse
constantemente diante da imagem. Enviou também uma comissão de homens competentes para que se
informasse sobre o aparecimento da imagem, e para depois levá-la em procissão para o povoado de
Cobre. Na procissão, com muitos cantos em louvor a Nossa Senhora, a imagem foi reconhecida como a
Rainha da Ilha. A imagem de Nossa Senhora da Caridade, então, foi conduzida e colocada no altar-mor
da igreja paroquial.
Em 1703, pelo número grande de romeiros que vinham de todas as regiões implorar a
bondade de Nossa Senhora da Caridade, foi construído o atual santuário no lugar indicado pela
própria Mãe de Deus, num outeiro que dista 430 passos da vila de Cobre. A festa principal do
santuário celebra-se em 8 de setembro, anualmente, com grande número de fiéis.
Os pobres e os enfermos vão em busca de alívio, e são inúmeros os prodígios
alcançados graças a Nossa Senhora da Caridade.
Oração a Nossa Senhora da Caridade
Santa Maria da Caridade que vieste como mensageira da paz, flutuando sobre o mar. A
Ti acudimos, Santa Mãe de Deus, para honrar-Te com nosso amor filial. Em Teu coração de Mãe
colocamos nossos anseios e esperanças, nossas alegrias e súplicas.
Por nossa pátria, para que juntos, todos construamos a paz e a concórdia; pelas
famílias, para que vivam a fidelidade e o amor; pelas crianças, para que cresçam sadios física e
espiritualmente; pelos jovens, para que reafirmem sua fé e sua responsabilidade na vida e em tudo o
que lhe dá sentido; pelos doentes e marginalizados, pelos que sofrem a solidão, pelos que estão
